One year of learning Japanese

It’s been about one year of studying the Japanese language, although I had a month off when M was born, and have only been doing maintenance since.

I’ve been using the following resources:

According to wkstats I know 256 radicals, 405 kanji, and 1174 vocabulary items. That’s apparently 98.73% of the kanji needed for N5 (the lowest level) of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test - 「書」is the remaining 1.27%.

Grammar is more challenging. I need a lot more practice with verb conjugation and basic constructs.

Of course, learning a language is about more than memorising alphabets and grammar rules. The goal (at least for me) is effective communication. So the goals for the first quarter of 2026 will be to find ways to practice production (written and spoken) and comprehension, and interact with some other humans. I need to make the most of limited practice time! Perhaps I can join an online class.

I’ll sit the N5 exam in July.

頑張りましょう!
